1891 census...Aged 8, he was living at Mill Road, Lakenheath with his father- Shadrack KENT [40] a farm labourer; his mother- Emma [40] (née BEAN); brother Charles William [12]; brother- Arthur [9]; sister- Hannah E.[7]; brother- Benjamin [5] and sister- Clara Winifred [5 months]. All were born in Lakenheath. 1901 census...Aged 18, a general labourer, he was still at Mill Lane, Lakenheath with his parents, brother Charles (now recorded as feeble minded); brother Benjamin, now working at the Co-Op shop, and sister Clara 1911 census...Aged 28, still single and a farm labourer, living at Wings Road, Lakenheath with his parents and sister Clara. Enlisted in Lakenheath. The 4th Suffolks occupied some poor trenches in front of Les Boeufs, making some minor attacks to gain ground but with only partial success. The last of these attacks was made on the 1st November and the battalion then moved back to the Flers line. On the 1st they lost 23 OR and 1 officer killed, only 3 have known graves, the rest are named on the Thiepval Memorial. The Bury Free Press of 18th November 1916, from which his photo came, mentions that the circumstance of his death had been published the week before, but that has not been found in any earlier weeks. |
